If you have any feelings of anxiety about this then please inform your therapist at the first meeting, so that we can work out a strategy to overcome this.

Is physiotherapy/sports massage painful?

For many patients one of the primary objectives is pain relief, although to achieve this objective; physiotherapy/sports massage techniques can be painful in some cases. For example, deep tissue massage or recovering knee range of motion post surgery can be painful.

To help reduce the pain experienced during treatment to a minimum, your physiotherapist will utilize a variety of techniques and communicate with you on the intensity, frequency, duration and type of the pain.

Your treatment plan can involve a number of techniques which are aimed at providing pain relief and restoring function.  For further information please click on the links to each treatment modality.

Manual therapy / Manipulation

Joints can often stiffen up especially after injury or if you are in pain. In addition, stiffness in these joints can itself lead to pain and aching due to the lack of the joint’s natural lubrication mechanism, which nourishes the joint cartilage. If a joint remains stiff for too long then this can predispose the joint to develop premature arthritic changes.

Joint stiffness can also led to compensatory body movement which can have a negative effect on the surrounding joints, muscles and ligaments. Often this compensatory movement can lead to further injury or pain due to overuse of specific joints or added tension in the muscles.

Gentle joint mobilisation techniques can be applied to restore normal movement of your stiff, achy joints. In cases where joints are very stiff a manipulation may be required. This is where the joint is carefully positioned and gently thrust by the therapist to restore full movement. Often the patient will feel or hear a small pop or click as the joint is manipulated. Mobilisations and manipulations are safe techniques.

Exercise / therapeutic movement therapy

Exercise and therapeutic movement therapy is an essential component of your rehabilitation and return to normal function, it is typically used in combination with other physiotherapy treatments to maximize recovery and to prevent the reoccurrence of your injury and pain.

Extensive research has shown that in cases of low back pain that the deep postural muscles may not return to normal function and strength despite the resolution of pain. In some cases this resolution of pain is only short-term and requires longer term progressive exercises to prevent re-injury. Evidence has shown that exercises which focuses on strengthening and improving the timing/activation of the core muscles can prevent low back pain from re-occurring.

You will therefore be prescribed an individually tailored exercise protocol to help create the optimal environment for your healing process, correct faulty biomechanics and restore your normal movement. It is advisable that you continue your this exercise programme and see us a few times a year to check your exercise techniques, modify your programme and to offer you any advice. Research reports that by doing this you will be able to self manage your symptoms and significantly reduce the probability of requiring intensive physiotherapy in future for that particular problem.

Postural, Ergonomic and Lifestyle Management Advice

At the initial assessment you will be advised on the diagnosis to your problem and advice on how to self manage your condition in all of your life environments.

All advice given to you will be evidence based and follow national guidelines. By following this advice you will facilitate your natural healing process in all of your life environments, ensuring you recover in the minimum number of treatment sessions possible.

Body Pro Physical Health also provides ergonomic and postural advice to your employer regarding optimum seating and other measures that may be required to aid your recovery.  If required we can liaise with your GP, personal trainer etc. to help with a graded return to work or exercise programmes.

Sports and deep tissue massage

Sports and deep tissue massage therapy is a soft tissue technique that is used to stimulate or relax muscles; please see the sports massage section for further details.

Strapping / Taping

At body-Pro Physical Health we often use tape to either support the damaged tissue around a joint to ensure that the damaged tissue heals in the correct position or influence muscle recruitment and encourage the restoration of normal movement. Failure to abide by this early management can lead to chronic problems

Warning, if your skin starts to change to the colour red after the application of the tape you may be allergic to it, if so remove the tape and visit either your local pharmacist or GP on aftercare and inform us.

Please inform us if you have a known allergy to tape, so we can assess if you are not suitable to undergo taping.
